Race Strategy Engineer

As a Race Strategy Engineer at HUST, you will be the mind behind how our solar car conquers 3,000 km of the Australian outback. Your role is to analyze data, simulate scenarios, and guide the team in making real-time decisions about speed, energy use, and charging. You will work closely with the electrical, mechanical, and telemetry subteams to transform raw data into winning strategies. This position combines technical analysis, big-picture thinking, and quick decision-making under pressure.

role overview

  • Learn about the unique challenges of solar car racing and long-distance energy management

  • Develop and refine simulation models that predict energy consumption, solar production, and vehicle performance

  • Use real-world data (battery, solar array, speed, weather, terrain) to simulate and optimize race strategies

  • Collaborate with the telemetry team to create tools and dashboards for live decision-making during the race

  • Plan race-day tactics such as target speeds, overtaking strategies, and energy reserve management

  • Support the team during testing and racing by evaluating conditions and adapting strategies on the go

  • Research and implement optimization techniques to maximize overall performance

As a part of this role you will:

You are analytical, detail-oriented, and thrive on solving complex problems. Ideally, you:

  • Have an interest in data analysis, mathematical modeling, sustainable transport, or optimization problems

  • Enjoy working with data and using it to guide decision-making

  • Are comfortable working with simulation tools, spreadsheets, or programming languages (preferred but not mandatory)

  • Can think both long-term and adapt quickly when conditions change

Who you are

  • A unique opportunity to be part of an international project with high visibility

  • Hands-on experience with energy modeling, optimization, and real-time strategic decision-making

  • The chance to directly influence the team’s performance and competitive outcome during the race

  • Access to a network of companies and alumni in engineering, data science, and energy industries

  • Practical training in interdisciplinary collaboration, critical thinking, and decision-making under pressure

What we offer

At HUST, members are encouraged to explore new ideas and find creative solutions independently. At the same time, you will not be alone. During the first part of the project, you’ll be supported by mentors and teammates who guide you through the basics. As the project progresses, you’ll take on more responsibility and become the go-to person within your area of expertise.
