Application

Solar Energy Systems Engineer

As Solar Energy Systems Engineer at HUST, you will be at the heart of what makes our solar car truly solar. You will design, implement, and optimize the photovoltaic (PV) system that powers the entire vehicle over 3,000 km of racing in the Australian outback. Your role covers everything from understanding solar cell physics to maximizing array efficiency to ensuring seamless integration with the rest of the electrical system. This is a unique chance to work hands-on with renewable energy technology in one of the most challenging racing environments on Earth.

role overview

  • Learn about photovoltaic (PV) cell technologies and their performance characteristics

  • Research, evaluate, and select optimal solar cell configurations for the car’s array

  • Design, build, and test maximum power point tracking (MPPT) systems to ensure efficient energy extraction

  • Collaborate with mechanical and aerodynamics teams to integrate solar cells into the car’s body design

  • Calibrate and validate the solar array under real-world conditions

  • Troubleshoot, refine, and optimize the system for reliability and efficiency during long-distance racing

As a part of this role you will:

You are curious, motivated, and excited about renewable energy. Ideally, you:

  • Have an interest in renewable systems, Solar energy (photovoltaic technologies), and power electronics (MPPT, DC-DC converters, etc.)

  • Enjoy combining theoretical research with practical hands-on testing

  • Like problem solving, optimization, and working across multiple disciplines

  • Are comfortable learning new tools and methods as needed

Who you are

  • A unique opportunity to be part of an international project with high visibility

  • Hands-on experience with solar energy, PV arrays, and power conversion systems

  • The chance to directly shape the car’s primary energy source and impact its performance in competition

  • Access to a network of companies and alumni in the renewable energy and automotive industries

  • Practical training in innovation, interdisciplinary teamwork, and system integration

What we offer

At HUST, members are encouraged to explore new ideas and find creative solutions independently. At the same time, you will not be alone. During the first part of the project, you’ll be supported by mentors and teammates who guide you through the basics. As the project progresses, you’ll take on more responsibility and become the go-to person within your area of expertise.
