Oscar PÅlsson

Head of Electrical

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering

I see HUST as the perfect place to prove and apply the theoretical knowledge I’ve gained during my education. My role as electrical team lead means I get to learn a little bit about every part of the electrical system, while also having the chance to lead and teach others what I've learned.

The best part of HUST is the opportunities it gives us; it allows us to go on amazing journeys while creating a car that proves renewable energy transportation isn’t that far away.

It is difficult to put into words what Hust means to me because so many happy and unforgettable memories come to mind. The process of planning and building a car, collaborating with people from different fields, and learning from one another is what makes Hust special. When you work on such a massive project with so many people, it’s impossible not to become close. Every moment, from working late nights in the workshop to early mornings in the Australian outback, becomes special when shared with people who have the same passion for a unique project like this.

My role in the electrical team centers on the low-voltage system, where I gained real-world design experience. In the last project, I also worked with high-voltage systems, assisting in the integration of low and high-voltage circuits. Hust has given me a deeper understanding of my studies and provided me with a distinct academic edge. In this project, I will be assisting the low-voltage team with PCB design and focusing on improving efficiency to lower the energy consumption in the car.

HUST is one of the few opportunities students have to take the theoretical knowledge gained inside the classroom and apply it to real-world challenges. It allows me to learn from and build upon a cumulative body of knowledge. Most importantly, I’ll get to work with a team of students who share one common goal – to build a solar-powered racecar and have a great time along the way.

As a new recruit in the low-voltage team, I’ll get to learn about the car’s peripheral systems while ensuring that they are reliable, low-expenditure and compliant with the rules and regulations of a given competition. In addition, we are also responsible that the low-voltage subsystems align with the high-voltage and telemetric subsystems, and integrate with the mechanical design of the vehicle.

For me, the best part about HUST is that it serves as a stepping stone towards what lies ahead. With a few years left until graduation, I look forward to forging strong, long-lasting bonds with the team, and developing into a true professional in the field – confident in my role as an engineer in the future.

Being part of the HUST team gives me a hands-on understanding of my education. It allows me to apply what I learn in the classroom to a large, ambitious project like the solar car, something that both challenges me and accelerates my development as an engineer.

As a member of the Low-Voltage subteam within the Electrical team, my responsibilities include designing circuit boards and reducing current consumption from the low-voltage components in the car, all while ensuring full compliance with competition regulations.

The best part about HUST is working alongside a group of driven and like-minded people. Everyone shares the same goal: to build the next car and continuously improve it, and that shared motivation makes the experience incredibly rewarding.

High-Voltage Drivetrain

Master of Science in Electrical Engineering

There’s no part of my education that has contributed more to my future than HUST. Being part of the project has given me an incredible number of friends, valuable knowledge, and practical experience in the electrical field. Joining the project has been the best decision I’ve made during my time at the university, considering the huge leap in competence it has given me.

As a low-voltage engineer in the project, I gained solid knowledge about the components involved in an electrical system. The challenge of combining a low-voltage system with a high-voltage system inside a car that we built ourselves created both a great learning opportunity and a valuable real-world experience. One of the advantages of working in a small team is the chance to take on greater responsibility and contribute outside your own area — not only to learn, but also to better understand each other within the team.

The project has given me more than I could ever have imagined. I hoped to learn a lot and meet established engineers in my field — and I did. I hoped to have a great time building a car and competing — and I did. What I didn’t expect was the friendships I made that will last a lifetime. Hopefully, these friends will one day become colleagues so we can continue working on great projects and having a great time together.

It is exciting to have the opportunity to get hands-on experience through using both the experience and knowledge I’ve gained before and during my studies at Halmstad University. To be able, together with the team, to design and build a car and compete in prestigious events.

My role in HUST is as one of the High-Voltage Drivetrain Engineers, meaning I have a part in designing the battery and included circuits. I am very excited to learn more about everything, especially battery construction using my theoretical knowledge and putting my skills in electronics and CAD to use.

The best thing with HUST for me is the practical experience I will gain, and the like minded friends I will make along the way. Getting an edge in the industry is just a bonus ;)

To be a part of HUST means that I get to work hands on with a real engineering project and have a lot of fun along the way!

HUST for me is really just one big amazing opportunity to grow and learn new things whilst at the same time have a lot of fun. Beeing a part of the high voltage team I’m expecting to learn about the battery and get some really in depth understanding for the inner workings of it and how it’s connected to everything else in the car. I also in a more general sense expect to get a much deeper understanding for how a car really works and what all the little components in it do so that they in the end together can create a real working car.

The best thing about HUST is the amazing and unique opportunity we get to learn new skills in. We get to learn by trying and by doing which I strongly believe is the absolute best way of learning. And we get to do it together with people who are just as inexperienced as us, but who also share the same excitement and hunger for actually learning and honing the skills necessary to be able to finish and make the project as good as possible. I think it’s something very unique in that, and it simply just makes me really excited to get to work!

HUST has contributed to a big part of my self development and has tremendously helped me narrow down the path I will be following in the future. Being a part of this courageous team has taught me what is achievable in limited time frames and how much knowledge there is left to be discovered.

I started my role in the marketing team where my responsibilities consisted of designing things that appealed to the human eye. Furthermore my career has transitioned into the electrical team where my focus will be to further optimize the embedded system of the car. It will be my duty to support the team's desires and to ensure a gratified project on my part.

Nonetheless, bonding with a community who share the same goal is destined to transcend into something greater. Problem solving with ways thought unimaginable, overcoming hardships from multiple angles but fundamentally the love for growth.

Race Strategy

Master of Science in Computer Engineering

As a Race Strategist my main responsibility is to work with data-driven decision making with a broad range of decisions involving everything from design parameters to driving optimization and fuel consumption. Working with strategy is very broad and thus gives lots of opportunity to collaborate with both the Electrical and the Mechanical team as there are a broad range of technical details which are relevant for my data analysis. This is the best part of strategy as I have a unique opportunity to understand how every technical aspect affects the overall driving result. The best thing with HUST is the sense of community with other students from different disciplines and collaborating together towards the common goal of making the world a better place. Today the world has a huge fleet of automobiles that is heavily reliant on fossil fuel contributing to a lot of emissions. Being a part of HUST feels like being a part of developing green mobility for the future that will challenge the unsustainable fossil based transportation of the present.

At first I did not expect to apply for HUST but when a friend told me of this position as Race Strategist that combined data analysis and data-driven decision making I could not resist. To apply data analysis to engineering applications is what I am truly passionate about and to get this opportunity to do it in the setting of collaborating with people from other disciplines and to learn and develop how data analysis can be used in this context is just amazing.
